A long weekend here in Austrakia. I thought I would get heaps of sewing done but several nana naps put paid to that idea.

I have made more blocks but here is what I have sewn together so far. It will be bright.

A busy week but now a few days off work.

Fabric was bought this week to use as my neutral in my hexagon quilt. I have lots of star fabrics but my basics especially in yardage are lacking. Fabric buying this year will focus on remedying that.

To the report then.

Fabric used this week. 1 metre

Fabric in this week. 5 metres.

Net position. 15 .75 in the red.

This is the progress I have made so far on the hexagon quilt I purchased fabric for. Hopefully a lot more will be completed in the next two days.

A busy few days has kept me away from the blog so time for a little catch up.

First up some photo a day prompts.

8/1 was lucky number and mine has always been 6. It was also our number when we were bidding on this house.

 

9/1 the prompt was natural. I chose this home grown dahlia.

 

I then missed a couple of days. Yesterday the 13/1 the prompt was something that makes you smile. Cleo from the moment she came into my life has done just that.

 

The late stash report is not good. In my defence most of the fabric was ordered before Xmas but not received till last week. I love these shot cotton modern solids.

Tonight I was reminded that I am getting older. Just over twelve months ago I had to get my first pair of glasses. I use them infrequently but more and more for sewing. Stupidly I left them at work so the easiest thing to do today was to cut more hexagons.

 

In a strange twist the photo prompt for today also involved eyes. Prompt was upside down and I was in the supermarket this morning when I discovered this new product that you spray on your closed eyelid and it gives almost instant relief to tired watery eyes. I think someone had an upside down way of thinking to come up with this solution.

 

 

6/1/14

First working day of the year with the majority of the staff back. Was a nice easy day to ease everyone back into routine.Today was also the start of healthy lunches for me. Today's selection baby spinach leaves, beet root, feta and walnuts with some red salmon on the side for protein.

In keeping with the easy nature of the day a little hand quilting was just the ticket for tonight.

I also played a little with some of my Celtic Solistice blocks to make sure I was happy with the direction they are going. Thankfully I am.

In keeping with this years mantra of reduce I am going to give the weekly stash report another go. I will still buy fabric but my aim for the year is to use more than I buy. So the totals for week 1 are

Fabric used 1/4 metre

Fabric bought. 0 metres

Net position. -1/4 metre

Part of my strategy to use up the stash is to start using Bonnie Hunter's method of having fabric cut intro useable strip sizes. The theory is if some of the work is already done you can get to the fun bit of sewing quicker. I can't bring myself yet to just cutting up the stash so it will be a gradual process. For example as I am cutting strips for her Celtic Solstice quilt I am also cutting strips in all her suggested sizes. I can see from this mystery how much quicker things would go with pre-cut strips. By this time next year I should have a selection ready to start.

I am also trying to use leaders and Enders so that progress is being made on a secondary project. I find it tedious to be cutting for two projects at once so on Sundays I will have a clean up of the fabrics used during the week and get some components ready to feed through my machine. This little pile was all I managed today.

 

Finally today's photo a day prompt was "found". The gorgeous Ally is rarely seen during daylight hours so when I saw her sunning herself I managed to snap a photo.

A trip to Newcastle today to celebrate the gorgeous Jacqui's birthday. She turned 21 yesterday and is an intelligent beautiful young woman.

I should not be surprised as she is the daughter of my oldest friend who would probably be cross with me for sharing this photo. Never mind I'm sure friends of 45 plus years can get away with it.

The day was also tinged with sadness with the news that Laurie's sister-in-law lost her battle with cancer today.

Not much time for sewing but I did manage to add two little pieces.

Finally the prompt for today was "words to live by". For me it just had to be this word which is my motto for the year. Seems like I am also reducing this to the bare minimum.

A work day. Theme for fmsphotoaday was "My Town". Well my town used to be considered suburbia but high rise like this is the new norm.

Some time tonight for some work on my Celtic Solstice blocks. I am pleased to say not a triangle point lost yet. My scant 1/4 inch is definetely improving.

 

 

2/1/14.

A lovely lunch today with my friends Michelle and Lisa at a local Vietnamese restaurant. I would love to show you a photo but sadly I took not a one. There was one strange thing. We ordered a duck salad and the duck was still on the bone. I guess I expected it to be shredded.

On the sewing front I added a hexagon to my reduce smoking quilt top. Every hexagon represents a cigarette I didn't have in the morning. The quicker it goes will mean the less smoking I have done.

The photo prompt for today was something beginning with the letter G. I was sorting through my fabric and came across this favourite which has a grey background. Plan is to make an economy block quilt and use this for the backing.

 

1/12/14

First day of the year and it seemed right to me to do some baking and try something new. I made a chocolate chip cookie slice and it is delicious. Weirdly the recipe had you melt the butter and then add the sugars and then cream them together. I am going to try it the traditional way next time as I think it was a bit grainy.

 

On the sewing front Bonnie revealed the mystery quilt today. I love the design and it is something I possibly would have not have started if I had seen it first. I will plod along making the components as it is a good way to use some of the stash. I have promised myself it will be a top if not quilted before next years mystery starts.

 

Prompt for photo a day was lunch. My photo is of the bacon and onion frying for my fried rice. One of my favourite food smells.
